Hoven FCCLA Holds Annual Halloween Carnival
By: Katie Arbach

On Thursday, October 31, the Hoven FCCLA Chapter held their annual Halloween Carnival for children in the community.  35 Kids came all dressed up in their costumes!  All of the little spooks enjoyed games like put the tale on the cat, cupcake walk, pumpkin bean bag toss, tattoo booth, and a pumpkin patch game.  Also, the kids did some arts and crafts to remember their fun day.

The cans of food that the kids brought for admissions will be donated to the Treasure Hut and go to the Food Bank.  The cans of food will also help us in a project we are doing for Share our Strengths.

Thank you to all of the FCCLA parents who helped bring treats, games, and helped throughout the day.  Also, thank you to Garret Spindler, Macy Lecklider, Tori Breaw, Kayla Sautner, and Katie McClure for volunteering your time to help the FCCLA members run this event.  It would not have been a great party without everyone’s help!

FCCLA Leadership Weekend

South Dakota FCCLA’s members “Discovered their Superpowers” at the recent Leadership Weekend on October 5th and 6th at the Crossroads Hotel in Huron, SD. 211 students and 33 advisers from across the state attended Rookie Camp, Power Training, or Peer Education Training. 2013-14 State FCCLA Officers led the Rookie Training.  They spoke about National Programs, Star Events and taught students the basic information about FCCLA. Rookie Training attendees received the Step One Membership Award at the conference.  Trent Misak, former National Officer conducted Power Training.  He incorporated dynamic leadership activities and games into his presentation that expanded students’ knowledge of FCCLA. Peer Education team members had their first meetings together and each team identified their state projects.  The Community peer education team planned projects to support the National FCCLA Outreach Project, Share Our Strength.  The Family team will be working with one of the National FCCLA educational partners, Autism Speaks, to bring awareness to autism issues.  And finally, the Career peer education team members are planning a year-long drive to support Ronald McDonald houses in South Dakota.

From the Hoven chapter 3 people went to the Leadership Weekend.  Bailey Zweber attended Power Training to get ready for district office.  Katie Arbach attended Peer Education Training as she is a Career Peer Educator.  Our Advisor, Mrs. Maier also went to learn about the new rules for FCCLA.

FCCLA stands for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and was first established in 1945 and in South Dakota in 1946.  Family serves as the central focus of this organization.  This career and technical student organization prepares youth to assume their adult roles in society as wage earners, community leaders, and caring family members by giving them important life skills needed to thrive in their families, careers and communities.

Mobridge College Planning Days
By: Katie Arbach

As we come to end of our high school years, the Juniors and Seniors are faced with many decisions and one of them is college.  Many students start questioning if they want to go to college or enter the military.  What should I major in?  Would it be best for me to just go straight into the work force?  There are so many different options!
On Wednesday, October 2nd the Juniors and Seniors went to Mobridge for the College Planning Day.  There were many different public and private universities, tech schools, and military representatives there for the students to look at and get an idea of where they would like to go after high school.
The College Planning Days was very beneficial to the students here at Hoven.  “It was very informational and it gave me confidence in my decision of what college I want to go to.” Quoted senior Bailey Zweber, who plans on going to Dakota Wesleyan next fall for Registered Nurse.
Along with the information on different colleges there were also booths on financial aid for the students to look over.  The students now have a better understanding of the colleges in the area and what they all have to offer.
The Golden Rule: RESPECT
By: Katie Arbach

Once again every month the Hoven School District will have a Dakota Character trait.  Dakota Character is an educational framework for teaching different values.  The theme for October is respect.  Respect means to show consideration for yourself, others, property, rules, and authority.
Our school values respect and teaches about bullying to emphasize the fact that if you are bullying or picking on someone else; you are not respecting them.  Every day on the announcements we hear a quote for the Dakota Character trait of the month.  As the students learn more and more about positive values, we hope to see a positive influence on our school and community.

His favorite sport is basketball because you have the crowd all around you cheering you on and it is a so exciting and fast paced game.
When asked who his favorite athlete is, he said “Tom Brady from the Patriots football team, because of his leadership on the team”
Tanner’s greatest athletic accomplishment was going to state in basketball.
His goals include making it to the dome in football, going to state in basketball, and of course graduating high school.
Some advice that Tanner gives to those younger people who are hoping to play sports is to work hard and you will do great.

Bang on the Drum All Day
By: Katie Arbach

Left, Left, Left, Right, Left!  Horns up!  Roll your feet!  Chin’s up!  Guide right!  If you’ve been hearing this in town around 7:30 in the morning it’s probably because the Hoven High School Marching Band is getting ready for Gypsy Days in a few short weeks.
How does all of this hard work pay off?  Band instructor, Elizabeth Bengs said, “Marching band definitely takes a lot of hard work and dedication.  When everyone puts in 100% we create a strong, unified ensemble.  Our goal is to come home with a gold at Gypsy Days, along with the award for top band of the day.  My favorite pay off from marching band is hearing people talk about the strong marching tradition we uphold in Hoven.  In fact, in both of my previous years, I have received emails from NSU students stating that our band is being talked about in music ed. classes.  This definitely shows that we have done our community and alumni proud!.”
Although waking up earlier isn’t something any of the students like to do, they all believe their hard work will pay off in the end.
Even though most people probably think marching band is one of the easier extracurricular activities they are sadly mistaken.  Mrs. Bengs stated that one of the benefits of being in marching band is physical activity, “Marching starts your day off on the “right foot” (well, actually the left when we march!) Some may think that surely you don’t get much exercise from marching, but just ask these students—if you are doing it correctly, you are getting a good workout and working up a sweat!”
The confidence that Beng’s shows, is also rubbing off on her students.  Senior, Scott Glodt said, “Although our band is small and young, we might struggle right away but we will rise to the occasion when Gypsy Days comes.”
One of the great things about our little town is the giant support we always receive from our community.  The Gypsy Day’s parade is on Saturday, October 5th, so if you are in Aberdeen that day, please don’t forget to stop by the parade and cheer loud for the Hoven High School Marching Band!

Last Year in High School

By: Katie Arbach

Finally after twelve long years of anticipation, waiting for the big day of graduation to arrive, senior year is finally here.  As I sit here and write this paper, I often wonder where all the time went, but then I look back and realize that the time spent was well worth my while.  There have been so many memories made with my classmates and friends that I don’t regret a single moment spent with everyone.  High school is a great time to have fun and enjoy life before reality actually starts.

My name is Katie Arbach and as most of you know, I am the daughter of Gary and Joyce Arbach.  I have one amazing sister who I am very close with.  Nicole Graduated in 2012 from Hoven High School.  She currently is going to school at the University of South Dakota in Vermilion.

I am currently a senior at Hoven High.  I have been involved in many different extra-curricular activities throughout high school such as chorus, band, flags, FCCLA, Student Council, FBLA, and French Club just to name a few.  I enjoy shopping and hanging out with friends and family.  After graduation in May, I plan on attending Stewart School to major in Cosmetology.

Senior Project Class can be a very fun class to be involved with.  I decided to be a part of this class because I love writing articles to get submitted into the paper and I like working on the high school website.  I enjoy having Mr. Cole as a teacher and am excited to work with him for the rest of my high school career writing articles and updating our website.
